Frequently Asked Questions

How soon can I plan a Sydney funeral?

Our Sydney funeral directors can help you prepare a service within a few days or weeks, this can be dependant on sudden or accidental deaths and the receipt of paperwork from a doctor.

Where can I have a Sydney funeral?

Creightons Funeral Service can facilitate funeral services anywhere within the Sydney region. As your trusted Sydney funeral director, our dedicated representatives will guide and assist you during the arrangement meeting to secure the facility you desire. At Creightons, we are committed to supporting you every step of the way, a promise we’ve upheld for almost two centuries.

Should we have a Viewing?

Viewing the deceased is a very personal decision. This can be a very emotional time, however, in our experience, we have seen many benefits.
A viewing not only helps the bereaved to face the reality of death but also allows for quiet times of reflection and goodbyes. Most viewings are held in our purpose-built private rooms, with staff available for support.

What about clothing?

Your loved one can be dressed as you wish, whether or not you are planning a viewing. Our Sydney funeral directors can discuss options with you.

Is embalming necessary?

Generally, embalming is not carried out. However, embalming is necessary in the following circumstances:

  • Repatriation of a deceased overseas
  • Burial above ground in a crypt or vault
  • A longer than usual delay between death and the funeral
Cultural requirements, e.g. the deceased is taken to the family home.
If embalming is required, your Sydney funeral director can make the necessary arrangements with our qualified embalmer.

Is cremation less expensive than burial?

Burial costs do vary depending on the chosen Sydney cemetery, however, a service involving a burial will usually include the following costs:

  • Cost of the final resting place (gravesite)
  • Opening/closing of the gravesite
  • Ongoing maintenance fees

If cremation is chosen, the family will need to decide whether to have a memorial site. Memorials offer tangible recognition of a loved one’s life and provide peace of mind knowing your loved one is resting quietly in a tranquil environment where their memory is beautifully preserved.

Do I need to arrange flowers?

Flowers are also a matter of personal choice. Whether it’s a single rose or a large floral tribute, flowers can be an important and symbolic part of a funeral. Our Sydney funeral directors can show you a selection of options and make all the necessary arrangements. Samples of flower displays/coffin cover sizes and pricing can be viewed on our website.
You may also choose to have no flowers and place personal items to decorate the coffin instead.

Do you offer a complimentary Condolence Book?

Yes. Guests at the service will have the opportunity to record their attendance in a complimentary condolence book. This will be presented to the Executor or, in their absence, the Senior Next of Kin (Snr NOK), at the conclusion of the service. We also give any personal items, photos and memorabilia provided for the service that you have instructed be returned to you at this time. You may discuss with your Sydney funeral director if some items are to remain with the coffin.
A certified copy of the medical certificate is provided and placed in the condolence book when available. We will submit the application for the official death certificate to Births, Deaths and Marriages on your behalf. When available, this will be mailed via registered post, directly to the Executor or, in their absence, the Snr NOK.

Can Creightons arrange a minister/celebrant?

Our staff can introduce you to a minister/celebrant who can assist and support you with the service, or we can consulate and coordinate with your chosen clergy or celebrant.

Do you cater for different cultures and traditions?

Operating for over 180 years, Creightons has extensive experience and expertise in incorporating the rituals and funeral customs of numerous faiths and cultures.

Does there need to be a religious ceremony with cremation or burial?

No. A civil ceremony can be conducted with a cremation or burial. You may also choose to have no ceremony at all.

What religious ceremony can I have with a cremation?

Services for a cremation are the same as those for a burial. The service may take place in your preferred Sydney church or chapel.

What happens with the ashes?

After cremation, the ashes are stored securely at the crematorium. The crematorium staff will contact you approximately two weeks after the service and request/update your wishes. If staff cannot get in contact via letter, they will reach out via phone to organise an appointment with one of our Sydney funeral directors who can explain available options.
